Rome, March 9 – A 41-year-old man has been arrested in the Prima Porta district of Rome following an altercation that left his 62-year-old flatmate with severe stab wounds. The incident occurred late Sunday evening, with the victim himself alerting authorities.
Emergency Response and Arrest
The alarm was raised around 11:10 PM on Sunday from Via Frassineto in Prima Porta. Police patrol cars and 118 emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, where they found the 62-year-old victim, a Sri Lankan national, outside his home with a deep stab wound to the abdomen and two other injuries to his arms. He was immediately transported to Sant’Andrea Hospital, where he remains in critical condition with a reserved prognosis.
The alleged assailant, also a Sri Lankan national, was apprehended by police on Via Frassineto. He was found in the company of another individual and still had the weapon, a serrated, pointed knife reportedly taken from a kitchen drawer, in his pocket. Following investigations by officers from the Flaminio Nuovo police station, the 41-year-old was arrested on charges of attempted murder and taken to Regina Coeli prison.
Investigation Underway
The victim’s statements, made to a friend and subsequently directly to the police before undergoing surgery, were crucial in identifying and apprehending the suspect. Preliminary reports indicate that the argument between the two flatmates took place inside their shared residence. The victim’s wife was reportedly present during the altercation but remained unharmed. The exact motives behind the dispute are still under investigation.
Recent Incidents of Violence in Rome
This incident adds to a series of recent violent events reported in Rome. Earlier this month, three minors were placed under house arrest following a homophobic assault on Alessandro Ansaldo. Another case involved an English student attacked in Villa Borghese, who was rescued by a taxi driver. The San Lorenzo district has also seen an outpouring of fear and anger after the assault on young Mohammed Miraoui, with residents highlighting concerns about women being attacked on the streets. Furthermore, a 64-year-old man died after a beating in Villa Gordiani, with an arrest made in connection with that case following a dispute between homeless individuals.
These incidents underscore ongoing concerns regarding public safety and social tensions in various parts of the city. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Prima Porta stabbing, with further details expected as the investigation progresses.
The Rome Police Department has recently inaugurated the first dedicated room for victims of gender-based violence, named “A Room of One’s Own,” at the San Paolo police district offices, aiming to provide a safe and supportive environment for those affected by such crimes.
