Paralympic Flame Ignites Italy: Rome Kicks Off Milan Cortina 2026 Tour

Rome, February 27 – The countdown to the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games has officially commenced with the arrival of the Paralympic Flame in Italy. Following its historic lighting in Stoke Mandeville, the Flame embarked on its Italian tour yesterday, February 26, symbolizing inclusion and determination across the nation.

The heart of Rome illuminated as the torch traversed the capital’s streets, culminating in a lively ceremony at a crowded Piazza del Popolo. Allianz Truck transformed the square into a festive stage, where torchbearers shared stories of resilience and passion, leading to the evocative moment of the brazier’s lighting.

Among the testimonials at the event were sprinter Marco Cicchetti, swimmer Domiziana Mecenate, and fencer Julia Markowska, all prominent Paralympic athletes.

The “Flame Visit” in Central-Southern Italy

To commemorate 20 years of partnership with the Paralympic Movement, Allianz has organized four special stages, known as “Flame Visits,” to extend the energy of the Games to Central and Southern Italy. After its Roman debut, the journey continues through major squares in:

  • Rome (Piazza del Popolo – February 26)
  • Bari (February 27)
  • Naples (March 2)
  • Bologna (March 3)

In each city, the Allianz itinerant truck will offer music, entertainment, and interactive areas, allowing everyone to immerse themselves in the Paralympic spirit, anticipating the Opening Ceremony on March 6 at the Arena di Verona.

“The flame is not just a sports symbol, but an itinerant message of unity and overcoming every barrier,” stated a representative from the Italian Paralympic Committee.

Upcoming Events and the Spirit of Inclusion

The tour aims to engage communities and promote the values of the Paralympic movement ahead of the 2026 Games. The events provide a platform for athletes to share their experiences and inspire others, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation for Paralympic sports.

The Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games are set to be a landmark event, showcasing the extraordinary abilities of Paralympic athletes and promoting a message of diversity and inclusion. The Flame’s journey across Italy is a crucial step in building excitement and engagement for these prestigious games.

The Italian Paralympic Committee, in collaboration with partners like Allianz, is committed to ensuring that the spirit of the Paralympics reaches every corner of the country, leaving a lasting legacy of inspiration and empowerment.

The detailed schedule for the remaining “Flame Visits” is as follows:

  • Bari: February 27, 2026
  • Naples: March 2, 2026
  • Bologna: March 3, 2026

Each stop promises a unique celebration, bringing together local communities, athletes, and supporters to partake in the excitement leading up to the Games. The events are free and open to the public, encouraging widespread participation and engagement with the Paralympic movement.

The final destination of the Flame before the Opening Ceremony will be the Arena di Verona on March 6, 2026, where it will officially mark the beginning of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games.
