Rome, March 4, 2026 – The Metropolitan City of Rome Capital and Retake Rome are set to sign a significant Protocol of Understanding on Friday, March 6th, at 4:30 PM, in the David Sassoli Hall of Palazzo Valentini. This agreement aims to bolster civic volunteering and citizen participation in the shared care of common goods across the entire metropolitan territory.

Extending Active Citizenship to All Municipalities

The protocol marks a crucial step in extending active citizenship initiatives and public space care projects to all municipalities within the metropolitan area. Many of these municipalities are already part of Retake’s territorial network, and this agreement will formalize and expand these efforts.

Objectives and Tools of the Protocol

The agreement seeks to support and broaden civic participation experiences in various territories. It will leverage Retake Rome’s extensive experience in promoting environmental volunteering and the shared management of common goods. This includes initiatives such as the “School of Active Citizenship,” which provides training for engaged citizens.

Key provisions of the Protocol include:

  • Strengthening the network of volunteers.
  • Developing new territorial projects.
  • Training active citizens.
  • Disseminating tools for collaboration between administrations and local communities.

These actions are consistent with the Metropolitan Regulation on the care and regeneration of common goods.

A Leap in Civic Participation

Rocco Ferraro, Delegate Councillor for Environment, Ecological Transition, Protected Areas, and Animal Protection, emphasized the transformative potential of the agreement. “With the signing of this Protocol, we will take a leap in civic participation, bringing collaboration between institutions and organized volunteering from the municipal to the metropolitan level,” Ferraro stated.

He added, “We want to strengthen and expand the network of active citizens who already care for the territory and build, together with Retake, new training paths and shared care projects in all municipalities of the Metropolitan City. Civic volunteering is a strategic resource for the protection of public spaces and for the growth of more responsible, inclusive, and aware communities: this is why the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital firmly believes in citizen participation.”

Prioritizing Urban Quality and Community Strengthening

The signing of this Protocol is a priority action for the metropolitan entity. It aligns with its broader goals of promoting the quality of urban spaces and strengthening local communities through civic participation.

This initiative underscores a commitment to fostering a sense of shared responsibility and collective action, ultimately contributing to a more vibrant and well-maintained metropolitan environment for all residents.
