Naples, March 1, 2026 – The National Federation of Nursing Professions (FNOPI) has issued a strong statement distancing itself from communications that, it claims, cause further distress to patients and citizens regarding the tragic case of ‘little Domenico’. The Federation specifically referred to statements made by Filippo Anelli, President of the National Federation of Doctors, which allegedly link errors in organ harvesting and transplant procedures to an increased transfer of responsibilities to nursing professions.

FNOPI Rejects Allegations, Calls for Respect

In its statement, FNOPI asserted that such remarks are an attempt to ‘wage ideological professional battles over medical procedures that have nothing to do with what happened between Bolzano and Naples’. The Federation has reserved the right to protect the image and skills of Italian nurses through civil, criminal, and disciplinary proceedings in response to serious allegations reported in the February 28 edition of La Stampa.

According to FNOPI, this is a critical time to rebuild trust within the entire transplant network. They emphasized the daily successes and high level of interdisciplinary professionalism that characterizes this crucial sector of the National Health Service in Italy.

Focus on Investigations and Family Grief

The Federation highlighted its previous silence and respect for the ongoing investigations, characterizing it as a deliberate response to what it deems ‘reckless and dangerous behavior for public health’. FNOPI has called for a ‘tone-down’ in public discourse, urging respect for the pain of the families involved. Furthermore, they advocate for recognition of all healthcare professionals who cared for little Domenico until the last day of his life.

Reaffirming Nursing Competence and Professionalism

The FNOPI’s communication underscores the importance of acknowledging the vital role nurses play in the healthcare system, particularly in complex areas like organ transplantation. The Federation aims to safeguard the reputation of its members against what it perceives as unfounded accusations that leverage a tragic event for professional disputes.

The incident surrounding ‘little Domenico’ has brought to light tensions between different healthcare professions in Italy. FNOPI’s strong stance indicates a commitment to defending the integrity and competence of Italian nurses, while simultaneously advocating for a more constructive approach to addressing the challenges within the transplant network.

The Federation’s call for a ‘tone-down’ and respect for ongoing investigations reflects a desire to move beyond inter-professional conflicts and focus on the core issues of patient care and public health, especially in such sensitive and emotionally charged circumstances.
