Milan, February 28 – A 15-month-old child, who sustained a head injury during a tram derailment in Viale Vittorio Veneto on Friday afternoon, has been discharged from the pediatric emergency room at Fatebenefratelli Hospital. The toddler, who was being held by a nanny at the time of the accident, was among the first to receive medical attention.
Details of the Tram Derailment
The incident occurred around 4:10 PM on Friday when an ATM tram, traveling at high speed, derailed while attempting to navigate a curve it reportedly should not have taken. The tram subsequently crashed into a restaurant window, causing significant damage and chaos.
Child’s Condition and Hospitalization
The 15-month-old, identified as the youngest victim, was thrown during the impact and hit his head. Following initial assessment by rescuers, he was transported to Fatebenefratelli Hospital, located less than a kilometer from the accident site. Doctors decided to keep him overnight for observation due to the trauma. Fortunately, a re-examination on Saturday concluded that the injury was not severe, allowing him to return home with his parents by 4:00 PM.
Fatalities and Serious Injuries
Tragically, the derailment resulted in two fatalities: Abdoul Karim Tourè, a 56-year-old Senegalese man, and Ferdinando Favia, 59. Favia was reportedly seated on the tram with his partner when he was ejected during the crash and crushed beneath the vehicle.
Of the 54 individuals injured and admitted to Milanese hospitals, several remain in critical condition. Two men are currently in Neurorianimazione at Policlinico Hospital, one in intensive care at San Raffaele, and another in surgery at Fatebenefratelli. Ten other patients are under observation, while the remaining injured have been discharged.
Official Responses and Support
Milan’s Mayor, Beppe Sala, visited the most severely injured patients at Policlinico Hospital. Alberto Zorzan, CEO of ATM, expressed his condolences for the victims and offered support to those injured. The incident has prompted an outpouring of grief and calls for justice, particularly from the friends of Ferdinando Favia, who was reportedly due to be married in April.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are currently investigating the precise cause of the derailment. The fact that the tram took a curve it was not supposed to, at high speed, is a key focus of the inquiry. The incident has raised concerns about public transport safety in Milan.
The community continues to mourn the loss of life and hopes for the full recovery of all those injured in this tragic event.
