Maxi Controls at Milan Central Market: 17 Activities Suspended Due to Cockroaches and Filth
Milan, February 21 – A major health inspection operation conducted by Ats Milano on Wednesday and Thursday at the Central Market in Via Sammartini 2 has led to the suspension of 17 businesses out of 27 inspected. The inspections revealed a widespread presence of live and dead cockroaches, as well as accumulated dirt that had not been removed, according to an official statement.
Only 4 out of 27 Food and Beverage Businesses Compliant
The controlled activities included restaurants, hot food establishments, bars, pizzerias, and pastry shops. The cockroach infestations were reported to be pervasive across these premises. In addition to the 17 suspensions, six other businesses received prescriptions, obliging them to comply with hygiene and health regulations. Only four businesses were found to be fully compliant with the standards.
Serious Deficiencies in Cleaning and Maintenance
“According to the assessment of the prevention operators of the Complex Structure for Food and Nutrition Hygiene, who carried out the official controls, the widespread and massive presence of pests is mainly attributable to serious deficiencies in cleaning and maintenance, both of the individual food businesses and of the building as a whole. Pests were, in fact, also found in the warehouses, changing rooms, and common areas of the structure,” explained Ats Milano.
The findings highlight significant issues with the overall hygiene management within the Central Market, affecting various types of food and beverage operations. The presence of pests in common areas and storage facilities suggests a systemic problem rather than isolated incidents within individual stalls.
Impact on Milan’s Central Market
The Central Market, a prominent culinary hub in Milan, faces a significant challenge in restoring public confidence and ensuring compliance with health standards. The suspensions are a severe blow to the affected businesses, which will remain closed until they can demonstrate full adherence to the required hygiene protocols.
This incident underscores the critical importance of rigorous and regular health inspections, especially in food establishments that serve a large number of daily customers. Ats Milano’s decisive action aims to protect public health and maintain the high standards expected of food service providers in the region.
Future Steps and Compliance Requirements
The businesses that received prescriptions are now mandated to implement necessary improvements to meet hygiene and health regulations. Failure to do so could result in further penalties or prolonged suspensions. Ats Milano will conduct follow-up inspections to ensure that all required adjustments have been made and that the premises are safe for operation.
The incident also raises questions about the overall management and maintenance of the Central Market facility. The presence of pests in common areas suggests a need for comprehensive pest control and cleaning programs across the entire structure to prevent future recurrences.
Local authorities and market management are expected to address these issues promptly to safeguard the reputation of Milan’s Central Market and ensure a safe and hygienic environment for both vendors and consumers.
