Palliative Care Initiated for Child in Naples After Failed Heart Transplant
Naples, February 20 – Domenico, a young patient at Monaldi Hospital in Naples, who has been on life support following a failed heart transplant on December 23, will now receive palliative care aimed at alleviating his pain. This development was confirmed by Francesco Petruzzi, the family’s lawyer, during a live television broadcast.
“We have requested Monaldi Hospital to initiate a shared care plan for Domenico, and the hospital has accepted,” stated Petruzzi. He clarified that this approach, introduced in 2017, is not euthanasia but rather a procedure designed to shift clinical therapy from curative measures to pain relief, avoiding therapeutic obstinacy.
Domenico’s mother, Patrizia, expressed her sorrow on the program ‘Dritto e rovescio,’ saying, “I am sorry, what I did was not helpful to my son. I wish I had discovered everything sooner. I would like my son’s story not to be forgotten.”
New Heart Deemed Incompatible
The news of a potential new heart for Domenico emerged last Tuesday. However, a day later, a consultation involving experts from leading pediatric heart transplant centers across Italy concluded that the child’s condition was incompatible with another transplant.
The decision to pursue palliative care reflects a focus on improving Domenico’s quality of life and comfort during this challenging time for him and his family. The legal framework supporting shared care plans allows for patient-centered decisions, ensuring that the focus remains on the well-being and dignity of the individual.
This case highlights the complexities and emotional toll associated with pediatric organ transplantation, particularly when faced with unforeseen complications. The medical team at Monaldi Hospital, in collaboration with the family and legal representatives, is committed to providing the best possible care under these difficult circumstances.
The community in Naples and beyond has closely followed Domenico’s story, offering support and prayers for the child and his family. The shift to palliative care marks a significant turning point in his medical journey, emphasizing compassionate care and comfort.
