Rome’s IX Municipality Inaugurates First Youth Council, Empowering Young Voices
Rome, February 17, 2026 – The IX Municipality of Rome marked a significant milestone yesterday with the official inauguration of its Youth Council, the first consultative body of its kind to be activated in the capital. The event, characterized by a packed hall, numerous young faces, and an atmosphere of enthusiasm, signals the launch of a new platform for participation dedicated to the young residents of the area.
The formal establishment of the new Council and the appointment of its president, Tommaso Martelli, officially commenced a journey designed to directly involve the new generations in municipal choices and projects.
Institutional and School Participation Highlighted
The initiative saw active participation from representatives of local high schools and members of the Council, indicating widespread interest and a genuine willingness to engage. The inaugural session was also attended by several institutional figures, including Ludovica Tranquilli, Councillor for Public Works and former Councillor for Youth Policies; Patrizia De Vivo, President of the Municipal Commission for Social Services and Youth Policies; Paola Angelucci, Councillor for School and Participation; and Lorenzo Marinone, Municipal Councillor for the Democratic Party and the Mayor’s delegate for Youth Policies.
Organization and Key Discussion Topics
During the proceedings, the organizational structure of the Council was outlined, a necessary step to define roles and operational procedures. This was followed by a broad and participatory discussion on issues deemed priorities by the young attendees. Central themes that emerged included the importance of promoting widespread youth aggregation throughout the territory and the necessity of identifying and enhancing dedicated spaces for both study and recreational activities. These issues, according to the discussion, represent concrete needs for the young people of the Municipality.
President Martelli Expresses Enthusiasm
Tommaso Martelli, 19, who graduated less than a year ago from Liceo Vivona where he served as a student representative and is currently enrolled in Economics at Roma Tre University, expressed his satisfaction with the launch of the Council. “It was a moment of great importance because finally, the Institutions have shown attention to the needs of the youngest. It is an honor to represent the first concrete example of a youth council in Rome, and my resources will be entirely dedicated to making this Council as participatory, relevant, and incisive as possible,” he declared.
Administration’s Support Emphasized
Councillor Ludovica Tranquilli underscored the administration’s belief in participatory instruments from the outset, particularly those aimed at younger citizens. “Seeing our hall so full of people today is a strong emotion that gives us a sense of shared effort. We strongly believe in the participation of young people in the active life of our Municipality,” she affirmed. The Councillor concluded by thanking the young people involved, the Municipal Commission, and the Council for their work over the past four years, a journey that led to the official operational status of the IX Municipality Youth Council.
