Via Ostiense in Rome to undergo major redevelopment with nearly €10 million investment

Rome, February 16 – The Capitoline Junta has given its approval to the technical-economic feasibility project for the redevelopment of Via Ostiense, a historic and highly trafficked artery in Rome. The project, with a budget of nearly 10 million euros (€9.8 million), aims to transform the section between Piazzale Ostiense and Via Francesco Negri, prioritizing green spaces, public transport, and pedestrian accessibility.

A Decisive Step Towards Modernization

The approval by the Junta, led by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, marks a crucial step for this strategic area of the city. The project, part of the 2026-2028 Investment Plan and managed by the Department of Infrastructure and Public Works, had already received clearance from the Services Conference in October.

Key Objectives of the Redevelopment

The new project has clear objectives: to improve public transport spaces, redevelop pedestrian areas and crossings, and enhance green zones, particularly central ones, making them more accessible and usable. This includes a reorganization of parking, reducing its impact where possible to create more green space.

  • Roadway Redesign: The project will redesign the roadway in both directions.
  • Pedestrian-Cycle Path: A new pedestrian-cycle path will be introduced.
  • Central Green Areas: A traffic island with new trees and a dedicated irrigation system will be created between Piazzale Ostiense and Via Giovanni da Empoli.
  • Raised Pedestrian Walkway: A raised pedestrian walkway will extend from Via Negri to the railway bridge, separating the central carriageway with preferential lanes from the two lateral carriageways towards GRA and the city center. These lateral carriageways will accommodate parallel parking.
  • Urban Furniture: New urban furniture, including benches, bins, and planters, will be installed.
  • Enhanced Signage: New signage will highlight tourist and cultural points of interest.

Comprehensive Urban Restyling

The project also encompasses a complete restyling of the urban space. This includes resurfacing the road and updating road markings, as well as redeveloping pavements, where asphalt will be replaced with high-quality materials such as basalt and travertine. Access ramps and Loges paths for the visually impaired will be restored.

Coordination with Other Interventions

Luca Gasperini, Councillor for Public Works of Municipio VIII, emphasized the importance of coordinating this project with other planned interventions in neighboring areas. “I have requested a technical meeting with Municipio VIII, SIMU, and the Mobility Department,” said Gasperini. “It is crucial to understand how this intervention fits within the planned redevelopments for Testaccio and Piazzale dei Partigiani. These are significant works, and the input from the neighboring Municipio I is also relevant.”

Gasperini added that his request comes from pressure from local residents concerned about construction sites potentially starting in the coming months. “There are various issues to bring to the table, and above all, we need a precise timeline to discuss with citizens,” he stated, highlighting the importance of dialogue with the community that will experience these changes daily.

The comprehensive redevelopment of Via Ostiense is set to significantly improve the quality of life for residents and enhance the urban landscape, making it more pedestrian-friendly and environmentally conscious.
