Naples, February 15 – A committee of Naples taxi drivers has voiced strong concerns regarding the escalating levels of fine dust particles in the city center, with a particular focus on Piazza Garibaldi. The protest highlights what they perceive as insufficient action from the municipality in tackling indiscriminate vehicle circulation and lax enforcement of traffic restrictions.
Taxi Drivers Express “Strong Concern” Over Air Quality
The base committee of taxi drivers expressed “strong concern” following statements from Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, which confirmed alarming pollution levels in the city center. This situation persists despite an invitation from the Campania Region and a subsequent directive from the Municipality of Naples on November 24, 2025, prohibiting the circulation of Euro 5 and older vehicles.
“To date, however,” states the committee’s press release, “this measure does not appear to be producing concrete effects nor is it adequately respected, given that city traffic does not seem to have significantly decreased.”
Health Risks for Public Transport Workers
The committee underscored the health risks faced by public transport workers, including taxi drivers, who are “exposed 24 hours a day to polluting agents,” as well as the entire citizenry. They are advocating for a comprehensive and effectively enforced traffic plan, the reactivation of Limited Traffic Zones (ZTLs) in the historic center, and structural measures aimed at substantially reducing the number of cars in circulation.
“For years, we have been urging the competent councilors for Transport and Legality to adopt an organic plan that can halve the vehicular flow in the historic center,” the committee concluded. “But despite our repeated requests and demonstrations, no concrete interventions have been implemented to protect the health of citizens and workers. In light of the alarm declared by the mayor, we believe decisive and immediate action is no longer postponable.”
Call for Decisive and Immediate Action
The taxi drivers’ committee is demanding immediate and decisive action from the city administration to address the critical air quality situation. They emphasize the need for systemic changes to urban mobility that prioritize public health and environmental sustainability.
The protest underscores a growing public awareness and demand for effective environmental policies in Naples, a city grappling with the challenges of urban pollution and traffic congestion. The taxi drivers’ appeal serves as a significant call to action for local authorities to implement and enforce measures that will lead to a tangible improvement in air quality for all residents and workers.
The current situation highlights the ongoing struggle to balance urban development and economic activity with environmental protection and public health. The taxi drivers’ demands reflect a broader societal need for sustainable urban planning and effective governance in managing environmental challenges.
The committee awaits a prompt and concrete response from the municipality, stressing that the health and well-being of the community depend on it. This protest is a clear indication that citizens and workers are no longer willing to tolerate the adverse effects of air pollution and are actively seeking accountability and change from their local government.
The issue of air pollution in Naples is not isolated, mirroring similar challenges faced by many urban centers globally. The effectiveness of local government in responding to such protests and implementing sustainable solutions will be closely watched by both residents and environmental advocates.
The taxi drivers’ persistent calls for action emphasize the urgency of the matter and the need for a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders to achieve a healthier urban environment.
