Rome Approves €7 Million Plan for Via del Mandrione Revitalization

Rome, February 9 – The Capitoline Assembly has approved a resolution for the coordinated management of interventions aimed at the requalification of Via del Mandrione in the VII Municipality. This area, famous for its role in popular culture, particularly as the set for Pier Paolo Pasolini’s film ‘Accattone’, is set to undergo a significant transformation with an investment of over 7 million euros.

Integrated Urban Renewal: Cycle Path, ‘Zone 30’, and Enhanced Security

The approved plan envisions the creation of a linear park and a mixed cycle-pedestrian path in the stretch from Via della Marrana to Via Casilina Vecchia, while ensuring a carriageway with one lane in each direction near the Felice Aqueduct. There is also a study underway for a possible extension to Tor Fiscale Park, with the goal of creating a comprehensive local masterplan for cycling mobility.

New Lighting and Video Surveillance System

A ‘Zone 30’ speed limit is planned for the area – still under consideration whether to apply it to the entire route or only to the initial part with traffic restrictions for local residents. Raised pedestrian crossings will also be introduced to enhance safety. The route will be enriched with urban furniture such as benches, plants, flowerbeds, and the installation of tourist signage. Via del Mandrione has become part of the Appia Antica Park, and the project includes a Tourist Information Point and a refreshment area to make the experience more enjoyable and comfortable.

An integral part of the plan is a new lighting and video surveillance system. This is particularly crucial for an area that has suffered from progressive degradation in recent decades, with problems related to urban decor, pavement maintenance, and safety.

Decentralized Tourism and Valorization

Mariano Angelucci, one of the Democratic Party councillors who presented the resolution, emphasized the need for a systemic approach in implementing these interventions. “The political direction given by the Capitoline Assembly serves to bring together all competencies for organic planning and tourist promotion focused on decentralization. The goal is to create an eco-sustainable and unexpected itinerary accessible on the Roma Turismo portal, through an app and adequate signage,” Angelucci stated.

The next step will be the convocation of a meeting with the VII and V Municipalities to start work within this year.

Acea’s Essential Contribution: Sewerage System

Francesco Laddaga, president of the VII Municipality, highlighted a crucial aspect: the start of work by Acea for the completion of the sewerage system on Via del Mandrione and the construction of a system for collecting and disposing of rainwater. These works, which the multiutility company has scheduled for 2026, are an essential preliminary step. The arrangement of underground services is fundamental before proceeding with the requalification of the road, to avoid subsequent interventions that would require re-working the project, which is currently in the process of being re-tendered for more detailed planning.

This comprehensive redevelopment project aims to transform Via del Mandrione into a safer, more accessible, and environmentally friendly area, enhancing its cultural and historical value while providing a better quality of life for its residents and an improved experience for tourists.
