Naples, Italy – The city of Naples is currently immersed in a three-day celebration for the 11th annual World Greek Language Day, an initiative aimed at reconnecting the city with its ancient Hellenic origins. The event series, which commenced on February 7th, highlights the enduring bond between Neapolis and its Greek heritage, emphasizing its significance not just as a historical memory, but as a living identity.
Organized by the Sintonia Committee – Coordination of High School Teachers for Greek Language Day, with the support of the Municipality of Naples – Department of Youth Policies, the program was unveiled at Palazzo San Giacomo by Councillor Chiara Marciani and Professor Jannis Korinthios, the event’s originator.
A Journey Through Time: Concerts, Tours, and Student Marathon
The celebrations kicked off on Saturday, February 7th, with the ‘Journey Concert’ held in the Sala della Loggia of Castel Nuovo. This symbolic venue, overlooking the sea, served as a poignant reminder of the historical routes that brought people, languages, and civilizations to the shores of Naples.
On Sunday, February 8th, students and teachers from Greece embarked on a guided tour of ‘Greek Naples.’ This educational journey, part of the broader celebrations marking 2500 years of Neapolis, included visits to the Archaeological Museum and the ancient city center, fostering cultural exchange and shared learning experiences.
The core of the event is scheduled for Monday, February 9th, with the student marathon titled ‘Greek is the Text,’ hosted at the Basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore. This full-day event will focus on the theme ‘My language is my homeland,’ and will see the participation of universities, high schools, and schools from Italy, Greece, and other countries.
Councillor Marciani: “Greek Reminds Us of Our Roots”
Councillor Marciani underscored the importance of the Greek language, stating, “We are very happy to continue this cooperation that recalls the importance of the Greek language, not only for our roots, but to deepen a different aspect each year.” She highlighted the European and international value of the chosen theme.
Professor Korinthios eloquently described the city’s essence, noting that “the sea makes people, ideas, values, and languages travel.” This imagery perfectly encapsulates Naples, a global city that has always embraced cultural influences.
