Naples: Shots Fired in Chiaia, Terror Captured on Surveillance Footage

In the heart of Naples’ upscale Chiaia district, behind the Prefecture, Piazzetta Carolina is typically a vibrant hub, monitored day and night by an array of ‘electronic eyes’ capturing the city’s nightlife and pedestrian flow. However, on the night of December 11-12, 2025, these very cameras recorded a scene resembling a war zone: eleven minutes of sheer terror.

Around 1:30 AM, four heavily armed youths on two scooters stormed into Piazza Carolina, firing shots at a group of young people gathered there. The shots were fired both into the air and at human height, with blatant disregard for innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. Panic immediately ensued, as young men and women fled, some abandoning their scooters and personal belongings in their desperate scramble for safety.

The Investigation: Unraveling the ‘Armed Expedition’

The Mobile Squad’s investigation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Minors and the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Naples, meticulously reconstructed the incident minute by minute. This was achieved through the cross-analysis of numerous public and private surveillance systems in the area. These ‘eyes’ ultimately led investigators to the four perpetrators, all from the Spanish Quarters and already known to law enforcement, two of whom are minors.

The sequence of events began far from the ‘good living room’ of Chiaia. At 1:46 AM, the two scooters were first captured on camera departing from Vico Cariati, at the corner of Vico San Sepolcro, in the Spanish Quarters. Shortly before, private cameras had recorded the preparatory phase: the meeting of the four, the retrieval of the scooters, and their subsequent departure via Emanuele De Deo. From there, their route traversed Montesanto, culminating in their armed arrival in Piazza Carolina.

Following the initial volley of shots, the escape continued. More shots were fired along Via Chiaia and up to Salita Sant’Anna di Palazzo. By 1:57 AM, just eleven minutes after their departure, the two scooters returned to the Vico Cariati area, retracing their original path. The vehicles were abandoned in different locations; the four then rushed to Vico Caricatoio, the residence of one of the suspects, before returning – with the exception of the latter – to the home of another, on Via Croci Santa Lucia al Monte, mere meters from where the cameras had captured both their departure and return.

The Suspects and the Underlying Conflict

At the center of the investigation is Vincenzo Giovanni Percich, known as Johnny, 19 years old. His father and brother are currently incarcerated for the murder of Umberto Catanzaro, a young footballer mistakenly killed last September. According to investigators, the shooting is linked to a feud between rival youth gangs originating from the Spanish Quarters, Montesanto, and the Santa Lucia-Pizzofalcone area – a territorial war for dominance.

At the conclusion of the investigation, seven young individuals were arrested and imprisoned, three of whom are minors. These arrests have been upheld by the Court of Review. The surveillance footage starkly highlights the real danger faced by innocent individuals completely unrelated to criminal activities. After the echo of gunshots, the square instantly emptied. Only one young woman remained, returning to retrieve her scooter, which she had abandoned moments before. The fact that an innocent victim was not caught in the crossfire was purely a matter of chance.

Unanswered Questions and Future Implications

This incident raises serious questions about public safety in Naples, particularly the escalating violence among youth gangs. The ease with which these armed individuals operated in a heavily monitored area, coupled with the apparent disregard for human life, underscores a growing challenge for law enforcement and local authorities.

What measures will be implemented to prevent such armed expeditions from recurring in the city’s public spaces? How will authorities address the deep-rooted territorial conflicts fueling these violent clashes among young people? The terror witnessed in Chiaia serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to ensure the safety and security of Naples’ residents and visitors.
