Four Indicted in Rome LPG Tank Explosion: Disaster and Manslaughter Suspected

Rome, January 22 – The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rome has indicted three additional individuals, bringing the total to four, in connection with the fatal LPG tank explosion that occurred at a service station in Via di Villa Gordiani on July 4th of last year. The new charges, which include disaster and negligent homicide, as well as injury, target the legal representative of the company responsible for transporting the LPG, the owner of the firm that leased the vehicle used for gas transport, and the owner of the Villa Gordiani service station. These three join the driver of the LPG tank, who was previously under investigation.

The explosion tragically claimed the life of Claudio Ercoli, an inspector. The investigation, coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Giovanni Conso, is ongoing, with authorities awaiting the results of further expert evaluations.

Background of the Incident

The incident, which took place in July of last year, caused significant damage and concern within the community. Following the explosion, a section of Via dei Gordiani was closed for the removal of the exploded LPG tank, leading to the temporary closure of businesses within a 150-meter radius. Efforts to rebuild and restore the affected areas have been underway, including a 2-million-euro renovation project for a local school.

One month after the explosion, the damaged sports center in the vicinity reopened, with its management expressing enthusiasm for the restart despite the devastating days that followed the incident.

Ongoing Investigation and Future Steps

Prosecutors are meticulously gathering evidence and expert opinions to determine the precise causes and responsibilities related to the explosion. The additional indictments underscore the seriousness of the investigation and the commitment to thoroughly examine all aspects of the tragic event. The results of the ongoing expert assessments are expected to provide crucial insights into the dynamics of the explosion and the potential liabilities of those involved.

The community continues to monitor the developments in this case, seeking clarity and justice for the victim and those affected by the disaster. The focus remains on ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future through stringent adherence to safety protocols and responsible operational practices within the hazardous materials transport and storage industries.
