Rome, January 19, 2026 – The exhibition “Impressionism and Beyond. Masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts” at the Ara Pacis Museum has become a resounding success, attracting over 50,000 visitors in just 40 days since its opening. This impressive turnout, averaging 1,250 admissions per day, suggests a projected total of 180,000 visitors by its closing date of May 3, 2026. These figures not only highlight the exhibition’s popularity but also underscore the vitality of a cultural offering that captivates a broad and diverse audience.
A Journey Through Modern Art: From Degas to Picasso
At the heart of the exhibition is a rare and precious selection of 52 works from the Detroit Institute of Arts, one of the most significant museums in the United States. These masterpieces trace the emergence of modernity, featuring renowned artists such as Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, and Van Gogh, extending to Matisse and Picasso. The collection also includes a significant exploration of European avant-garde movements and the German art scene, with works by figures like Kandinsky and Beckmann.
The exhibition’s chronological narrative spans from the mid-19th century to the early decades of the 20th century. It vividly portrays a revolution in artistic perception: the gradual liberation of color, the departure from academic representation, and the birth of new artistic languages that would define 20th-century art. This fluid and coherent narrative appeals equally to seasoned art enthusiasts and those new to these celebrated artists.
Curatorial Excellence and Widespread Accessibility
Curated by Ilaria Miarelli Mariani and Claudio Zambianchi, the exhibition is promoted by Roma Capitale – Department of Culture and the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage. It is co-produced and organized by the Capitoline Superintendence and MondoMostre, with support from Zètema Progetto Cultura. This collaborative effort has resulted in a project of high scientific caliber and significant public engagement.
Special attention has been given to accessibility and inclusion, with tools and pathways designed to ensure the widest possible participation. This focus on inclusivity further contributes to the exhibition’s success and the growing public interest surrounding it. In a often fragmented cultural landscape, “Impressionism and Beyond” stands out as one of the major events of the Roman season. It combines museum-quality exhibits, international scope, and a public response that reaffirms art’s power as a catalyst for interest and participation when presented effectively.
