Naples Implements Enhanced Surveillance Zones to Combat Crime and Disorder
Naples, January 17, 2026 – The Municipal Administration of Naples has announced the establishment of new ‘Enhanced Surveillance Zones’ across five key areas of the city. This extraordinary measure, issued by the Prefect of Naples, aims to bolster security and improve the quality of life for residents by addressing issues of micro-crime, urban decay, and uncontrolled nightlife.
The prefectural ordinance, which takes immediate effect and will remain valid until April 16, 2026, is a direct response to the growing need to counter phenomena that hinder the free use of public spaces by citizens. Five Macro-Areas Under Reinforced Vigilance
The decree designates five specific macro-areas within the city for reinforced vigilance. These include:
- Coroglio Area: Encompassing Via Coroglio, Discesa Coroglio, Via Nisida, and surrounding areas extending to the borders with Pozzuoli.
- Mergellina and Caracciolo Area: Including Via Mergellina, Piazza Sannazaro, Via Caracciolo, Via Partenope, and the Riviera di Chiaia.
- Porta Capuana Area: Affecting Piazza Garibaldi, Corso Garibaldi, Piazza Principe Umberto, and adjacent streets.
- Piazza Bellini and Piazza Dante Area: Covering the historic center, specifically Via Duomo, Piazza Cavour, Via Costantinopoli, Piazza Bellini, and Piazza Dante.
- Barra Area: Focused on Piazza Bisignano, Corso Sirena, and Corso Bruno Buozzi.
Measures to Tackle Crime and Antisocial Behavior
Within these designated zones, specific measures will be enforced. A key provision is the prohibition of loitering for individuals who have already been reported to the Judicial Authority for particular offenses. These offenses include drug dealing, crimes against persons, robbery, theft, and illegal possession of weapons. If such individuals display aggressive, threatening, or harassing behavior, law enforcement agencies are empowered to immediately remove them from these areas.
The Administration emphasized that this measure became necessary due to a significant number of complaints from citizens and associations. These complaints highlighted a reduced usability of public spaces, attributed to disruptive gatherings, acts of vandalism, and excessive noise pollution. The positive outcomes observed from previous ordinances have underscored the effectiveness of such exceptional tools in maintaining public order and urban security.
