Security Emergency in Esquilino: Residents’ Sit-in Scheduled for Saturday, January 17th
Rome, January 16, 2026 – A sit-in demanding greater security has been organized for Saturday, January 17th, at 11:00 AM in Calipari Gardens, Piazza Vittorio. The event is spearheaded by the Rione Esquilino neighborhood committee, in collaboration with the Portici Piazza Vittorio, Rinascita Esquilino, and Abitanti Via Bixio committees. This mobilization is a direct response to several assaults that have occurred in recent days within the I Municipality’s Esquilino district and the Termini Station area, raising alarm among residents and frequent visitors to the city center.
In a press release, the committees have called upon the competent authorities to address the urgent need for concrete security and legality measures, denouncing a situation perceived as unsustainable and dangerous for public safety.
A Series of Attacks Near Termini and Esquilino
In the first days of January, violent incidents were reported in the Termini Station area and its surrounding streets, causing significant concern among citizens and the local community. According to recent reports, on Saturday, January 10th, two assaults occurred within an hour in the Termini area: in Via Giolitti, a 57-year-old man was attacked by a group of individuals and hospitalized in critical condition at Umberto I Polyclinic with head and facial fractures. In Via Manin, a 23-year-old delivery rider was beaten and taken to the hospital with non-serious injuries. For both incidents, the police are conducting investigations, coordinated by the mobile squad and the Viminale police station, to identify those responsible.
In the same area, extraordinary reinforced control operations are underway by the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza, with canine units and special departments deployed near Piazza dei Cinquecento, Via Giolitti, Via Cavour, Via Massimo D’Azeglio, and Via Amendola, in an attempt to combat petty crime and restore security to the area.
Residents’ Protest Highlights Broader Concerns
The neighborhood committees emphasize that the recent violent episodes are part of a broader context of degradation and perceived insecurity in Esquilino, an area heavily frequented by commuters, tourists, and residents. During Saturday’s sit-in, the organizers will call on authorities for urgent and structured interventions, which can no longer be postponed, to guarantee security and legality in a strategic area of the Capital. “An intervention by the competent authorities can no longer be postponed because the safety of people is at risk with each passing day,” the statement reads, highlighting the urgency of responses from institutions.
The residents’ demonstrations follow a growing focus on urban security, with reinforced police interventions and intensified surveillance in some critical points of the neighborhood, seeking a balance between territorial control and safeguarding citizens’ freedom of movement.
The protest is scheduled to take place tomorrow morning, Friday, January 17th, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and is expected to draw a significant number of concerned citizens and local community members.
Authorities have acknowledged the concerns raised by the residents and have indicated that they are actively working to address the security issues. However, residents are demanding more visible and long-term solutions to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the Esquilino district.
This sit-in is not an isolated event but rather a continuation of efforts by local committees to bring attention to the deteriorating security situation. Previous appeals and meetings with local officials have not yielded the desired results, leading to this public demonstration as a last resort to pressure authorities into taking decisive action.
The committees also plan to present a list of specific demands to the city administration, including increased police presence, better lighting in public areas, and more effective measures to combat drug dealing and petty crime. They argue that a comprehensive approach is needed to tackle the root causes of insecurity and create a safer environment for all.
The Esquilino district, known for its multicultural character and historical significance, has been grappling with social and economic challenges that contribute to the rise in crime. Residents believe that a collaborative effort between law enforcement, local government, and community organizations is essential to reverse this trend and restore a sense of peace and order.
The outcome of the sit-in and the subsequent response from the authorities will be closely monitored by the residents, who are determined to see tangible improvements in their neighborhood’s security. This event underscores the growing frustration among citizens who feel that their concerns are not being adequately addressed by those in power.
