School Caretaker Arrested for Stalking ‘Courageous Principal’ in Caivano
Naples, January 13 – Giuseppina Giugliano, a school caretaker who gained public attention for her alleged daily commute from Caivano to Milan, has been arrested for stalking Eugenia Carfora, the principal of the ‘Morano’ institute in Caivano’s Parco Verde. The arrest comes after a prolonged period of alleged harassment following Giugliano’s dismissal from the school in November 2023.
The incident intertwines two distinct narratives, both rooted in the public education system. On one side is Eugenia Carfora, widely known as the ‘courageous principal’ of Caivano. She is celebrated for her efforts in challenging organized crime, combating school dropout rates, and keeping her school open extended hours to offer young people an alternative to street life. Carfora’s dedication has made her a national symbol, inspiring the Rai fiction series ‘La Preside,’ starring Luisa Ranieri, which premiered yesterday evening.
On the other side is Giuseppina Giugliano, whose name became familiar in 2023 due to a widely reported story. She claimed to wake up at 4 AM daily to commute by train from Naples to Milan, work at the Boccioni high school, and return home the same day. Giugliano stated that her salary of less than 1,200 euros per month prevented her from affording accommodation in Milan. This narrative garnered significant media attention and public sympathy, though inconsistencies later emerged regarding the accuracy of her account.
The Intersection of Two Stories: Giugliano’s Assignment to Caivano
Following the media attention, Giugliano secured a temporary assignment closer to home, specifically to the ‘Morano’ institute in Caivano, led by Principal Carfora. This marked the point where their previously parallel paths converged.
Dismissal and Escalation of Harassment
Shortly after Giugliano began her new role in November 2023, she faced allegations of several unjustified absences from work. Principal Carfora, adhering to established procedures, reported the case to the Ministry. Consequently, Giugliano was dismissed. She contested the decision, claiming to have submitted a medical certificate that never reached the school, and asserted she was a victim of injustice. However, appeals upheld the dismissal.
From that point, the situation escalated from an administrative dispute to a personal one. Giugliano allegedly began sending hundreds of emails, messages, and social media posts, relentlessly targeting Principal Carfora. The volume and persistence of these communications led Carfora to file a complaint for stalking. A judge subsequently issued a restraining order, prohibiting Giugliano from approaching Caivano and San Felice a Cancello, and from communicating with Carfora via electronic means or messages.
Arrest and Current Status
Despite the restraining order, Giugliano allegedly violated its terms multiple times. Principal Carfora reported these violations to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Naples North, leading to an aggravated precautionary measure: Giuseppina Giugliano’s arrest. She remained in prison for nearly two months.
Represented by lawyer Corrado Coppola, Giugliano was released after appealing to the Review Tribunal. She is currently under house arrest, awaiting the conclusion of the stalking trial, which is expected by the end of January.
This case highlights two starkly different trajectories originating within the public school system. On one hand, a principal who embodies civil redemption; on the other, a worker who became a media phenomenon only to face a regrettable legal descent.
