Muggiò, January 14 – A 31-year-old woman is fighting for her life after being brutally attacked and stabbed multiple times by her husband yesterday evening in their apartment in Muggiò, in the province of Monza. The assailant, 43-year-old Sergio Laganà, fled the scene but later turned himself in to the Carabinieri and has been arrested on charges of attempted femicide.
Tragic Attack Amidst Separation Proceedings
The horrific incident unfolded around 6:00 PM on Tuesday, January 13, in an apartment on the fifth floor of a condominium at Via Europa, 30. The couple, both Italian, were reportedly in the process of separating, and initial investigations suggest that Laganà’s inability to accept his wife’s decision to leave him was the motive behind the violent assault.
The woman sustained severe stab wounds to her lungs, and her condition was described as extremely critical upon arrival at San Gerardo Hospital in Monza. While doctors have managed to stabilize her, her prognosis remains guarded. The weapon used in the attack was reportedly found at the scene by Carabinieri.
Child Present During the Attack
Tragically, the couple’s two-year-old son was present in the apartment during the attack. After the incident, the child was entrusted to his maternal grandparents. Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief, describing the couple as quiet and never having anticipated such a violent event. The woman’s parents are well-known in the community, having managed a stationery and newsstand for a decade before opening a bar in nearby Desio.
Husband Surrenders to Authorities
Following the assault, Sergio Laganà, who works as a delivery driver for a local tire shop, fled the scene on foot, reportedly scaling a courtyard gate. However, he later presented himself at the Carabinieri station in Monza, a few kilometers away. He was reportedly still wearing blood-stained shoes and clothes. He was then taken to the Carabinieri company command in Desio, where he was questioned by investigators and Public Prosecutor Nicola Balice, to whom he reportedly made spontaneous statements.
