ROME – On Sunday, January 18th, the Eternal City will embrace a new aroma – that of fresh bread, crisp vegetables, and wholesome farm produce. Rome’s upcoming Ecological Sunday will be entirely devoted to agriculture, highlighting its intrinsic link to environmental sustainability, circular economy, short supply chains, and high-quality local products. This day is designed not only for shopping but also to encourage reflection on the food that graces our tables and how it can serve as a tool for education and community solidarity.
Five Squares, One Large Urban Farm
From 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, five prominent city squares will host stands and events animated by key agricultural and associative entities from the region. Participating organizations include CIA, Confagricoltura with the Garibaldi Agricultural Institute, Coldiretti, Slow Food, and the Sereni Agricultural Technical Institute. Additionally, a dedicated institutional stand, established through a protocol signed between the Assessorato and ENPAB, will feature biologists and nutritionists offering advice on proper nutrition to citizens.
From Re di Roma to Balduina: A Culinary Journey
At Piazza dei Re di Roma, in collaboration with CIA and Mercati Contadini Roma e Castelli Romani, twenty stands will be set up for the sale of agricultural products and street food. Meanwhile, Piazza della Balduina will host Coldiretti Lazio with fifteen stands from the Campagna Amica market, providing Romans with an opportunity to discover, taste, and purchase the agricultural excellences of Lazio.
Tradition, Agritourism, and ‘Good and Fair’ Food
Piazza Farnese will welcome Confagricoltura, Agriturist Roma, and the Garibaldi Agricultural Institute, featuring informative stands and tastings of typical Roman countryside products. This initiative aims to promote and safeguard agritourism by bringing it directly into the city. At Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice, Slow Food Lazio will animate the Regional Earth Market with thirty stands, street food, and workshops for both adults and children. In partnership with Legacoop, the new artisanal brewery from Quarticciolo will also be present.
Spotlight on Youth and Upcoming Events
Finally, Largo Agosta will showcase products crafted by students of the Emilio Sereni Agricultural Technical Institute, offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable agriculture. This event marks the culmination of a vibrant day. The subsequent Ecological Sundays for 2026 are already scheduled for February 22nd and March 29th, making it essential to mark these dates in your calendar.
The event is part of a broader initiative by the city to promote sustainable living and support local producers. By bringing the farm directly to the city, Rome aims to shorten the food supply chain, reduce environmental impact, and foster a stronger connection between consumers and the origins of their food. Educational workshops will cover topics ranging from organic farming techniques to the benefits of seasonal eating, engaging participants of all ages in a hands-on learning experience.
Local businesses, particularly those in the food and beverage sector, are expected to benefit from the increased foot traffic and public awareness generated by the Ecological Sunday. This initiative is a testament to Rome’s commitment to becoming a greener and more sustainable city, aligning with broader European goals for environmental protection and economic resilience. The success of this event will be closely monitored as a model for future urban sustainability projects.
