ROME – A 57-year-old senior official from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy is currently in intensive care at Policlinico Umberto I after a savage beating by a group of at least eight young men near Rome’s Termini Station. The attack, which took place on the evening of January 11 in Piazza dei Cinquecento, was captured by surveillance cameras. The victim, who suffered multiple fractures to his face and head, is intubated but doctors state his life is not in danger. His sister, who traveled from Milan, expressed shock at such an event occurring in a central Rome square.
Brutal Attack Unprovoked, Investigation Underway
The official had left his home in Esquilino to go to a pharmacy when he was assaulted. Footage acquired by the Flying Squad, in collaboration with the railway police and the Viminale police station, shows the group approaching him and launching a violent, unprovoked attack. Investigators have ruled out robbery as a motive, as the victim’s wallet and phone were still on him when he was found by passersby and transported to the hospital by an Ares 118 ambulance. Authorities are now reviewing additional surveillance footage around Termini to understand the events leading up to the assault, particularly if there was any prior contact between the victim and his attackers.
Two Suspects Apprehended in Connection with the Attack
Following the incident, a large-scale police operation in the area led to the arrest of two of the eight assailants. Mohamed Mansy Mahmoud Mohamed Elramady, an 18-year-old Egyptian, and Moslem Othmen, a 20-year-old Tunisian, have been charged with attempted murder in complicity. Elramady, who has a history of robbery, receiving stolen goods, and carrying weapons, had been previously expelled in January for being undocumented but remained in Rome. Othmen is known for involvement in brawls and drug-related offenses.
Rider Attacked Hours Later in Separate Incident
Just over an hour after the attack on the ministry official, a 23-year-old Tunisian delivery rider was assaulted in similar circumstances on Via Manin, mere meters away. He was beaten by a group of at least ten individuals, possibly under the influence of crack cocaine, who then stole his bicycle. The rider, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was also hospitalized. Police do not believe the two incidents are directly linked, though they do not rule out the possibility that the perpetrators might know each other.
Additional Arrests Made in Rider Assault
For the attack on the rider, two more individuals, both Tunisian, were arrested: Adem Raouafi, 22, and Marwen Abid, 18. They face charges of aggravated robbery and assault. Abid has a residence permit and a history of drug dealing and threats.
