Milan, January 5 – Niguarda Hospital in Milan has issued a new medical bulletin regarding the eleven patients injured in the Crans-Montana tragedy. The patients, consisting of nine young people aged between 15 and 16, and two women aged 19 and 55, are all sedated and in critical condition.
Patients Not Yet Out of Danger, Long Recovery Expected
As families of the victims await the arrival of a military flight carrying the deceased young people at Linate Airport, Niguarda Hospital provides an update on the injured. “All patients are sedated and in reserved prognosis, and it is premature to consider them out of danger. The clinical assistance and intensive care pathways each of them is facing are long and complex, and will require at least several weeks,” doctors explained in a statement.
The hospital’s operating rooms are continuously active to perform various necessary surgical interventions, with constant support from anesthetists and resuscitators. The extent of their burns (second and third degree) ranges from 10% to over 50%, affecting limbs, back, and face. Several patients also suffer from significant lung damage caused by smoke inhalation, requiring mechanical respiratory assistance.
Six Patients in Particularly Serious Condition
Six of the eleven patients are currently in Intensive Care and are considered to be in particularly serious condition. These patients require extensive care for infection control (common in severe burn cases), organ function support, and metabolic management. Three of these six are deemed critically ill.
Niguarda Hospital has also indicated its readiness to admit an additional patient currently hospitalized in Zurich, who is not yet deemed transportable, and to provide support and assistance to other injured individuals.
The incident has drawn significant attention, with calls for investigations into safety controls in the Swiss municipality where the tragedy occurred. Legal proceedings are underway to determine responsibility, though prosecutors have stated there are currently no grounds for precautionary arrests of the venue owners.
Community Support and Ongoing Investigations
The community in Milan has shown solidarity, with friends and family attending a vigil for Achille Barosi, a 16-year-old victim, at the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio. The city continues to grapple with the aftermath of the tragic event, offering support to those affected.
Further details regarding the ongoing investigations and the condition of the patients are expected to be released periodically by Niguarda Hospital and the relevant authorities.
