Rome has declared an orange alert for severe weather on January 6, 2026, following intense rainfall that has led to significant flooding and safety concerns. The Tiber River has surpassed the seven-meter mark, causing its banks to overflow, while the Aniene River has burst its banks near Tivoli and poses a risk in the V municipality of the capital, particularly in the La Rustica district. In response to the escalating situation, Rome Capital’s Civil Protection has enacted a series of preventative measures to ensure public safety.

WHAT AREAS ARE AFFECTED AND WHAT ARE THE RESTRICTIONS?

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri has signed an ordinance outlining critical safety measures for citizens:

  1. Access Restrictions:
    • Parks and Historic Villas: Access is strictly prohibited.
    • Cemeteries: Closed, except for urgent needs.
    • Public and Open Areas: Aggregative, recreational, or non-competitive sports activities are banned.
    • Areas Under Suspended Loads or Trees: These areas are interdicted.
  2. Tiber River:
    • Riverbanks: All access points to the Tiber’s urban riverbanks have been closed by Civil Protection.
    • Cycle Paths: Paths along the riverbanks are submerged.
  3. Aniene River:
    • Overflow: The river has overflowed at Pontelucano (Plauzi) near Tivoli.
    • Risk Areas: High-risk levels are observed in the V municipality, especially near the La Rustica district.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Avoid Underpasses and Flood-Prone Areas: Citizens are strongly advised to stay away from these locations.
  • Basements and Semi-basements: Avoid these areas due to potential flooding.
  • Balconies: Do not stay on balconies for extended periods.
  • Driving: Exercise extreme caution while driving.
  • Coastal Areas: Be vigilant in coastal regions.

ADDITIONAL MEASURES AND CONTACTS:

  • Temporary Events and Navigation Companies: Responsible parties must suspend all reception and boarding activities for users.
  • Duration of Measures: The provisions, effective from the evening of January 4, will remain in force until the emergency subsides.

Civil Protection of Rome Capital:

  • For emergencies and information, please follow official updates from the Civil Protection.

Further Information:

  • Stay updated on the latest weather alerts and civil protection advisories through official channels.

These measures are crucial to mitigate risks associated with the severe weather. Residents are urged to comply with all directives and prioritize their safety.
