Naples, December 23, 2025 – A significant step towards urban regeneration and improved public transport connectivity in Naples was taken today with the signing of an agreement for the transfer of land from FS Sistemi Urbani and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) to the Municipality of Naples. The acquired areas, totaling approximately 93,000 square meters, are located at the FS station in Naples Campi Flegrei.

Strategic Agreement for Metropolitan Development

This land transfer follows a comprehensive Program Agreement signed by the Campania Region, the Municipality of Naples, the State Property Agency, the University of Naples Parthenope, RFI, and FS Sistemi Urbani. The agreement outlines plans for the construction of a new station and depot for Metro Line 6, the regeneration of railway areas, and the establishment of a new campus for Parthenope University.

Specifically, the land in Via Campegna will host the new depot/workshop for Metro Line 6. This, combined with the new station in Via Campegna, is designed to create a crucial intermodal exchange system between metropolitan lines L2 and L6. The primary objective is to enhance public transport connectivity and streamline transfers between various modes of transportation, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the city’s transport network.

Statements from Key Officials

Matteo Colamussi, CEO and General Manager of FS Sistemi Urbani, emphasized the importance of this development. “The transfer of our areas represents a cornerstone for the development of the city and connections with the metropolitan area. The FS Group confirms its attention and support for the relaunch of sustainable and interconnected urban mobility through concrete initiatives whose primary beneficiaries will be the citizens,” he stated.

Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi echoed this sentiment, highlighting the historical significance of the acquisition. “Today we take another step forward for the enhancement of city mobility. The acquisition of the areas in Via Campegna for the construction of the new station and the depot of Line 6 allows us to solve a historical problem,” said Mayor Manfredi. He added that this intervention will enable the full utilization of an essential interchange line for the Campi Flegrei area, ensuring the full operation of Metro Line 6, which is a critical hub for the entire metropolitan region.

Commitment to Sustainable Mobility

Mayor Manfredi further reiterated the city’s commitment to sustainable mobility. “We continue to work to encourage sustainable mobility, and this piece adds to the path already started of strengthening urban public transport, an indispensable service for the well-being of the community,” he concluded. The project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and encourage the use of public transport among residents and visitors alike.

Future Impact and Benefits

The regeneration of the railway areas will not only improve transport infrastructure but also contribute to the aesthetic and functional revitalization of the Campi Flegrei district. The new Parthenope University campus will bring educational opportunities closer to students and foster a vibrant academic environment, further integrating the university into the urban fabric. This multi-faceted project is anticipated to bring long-term economic and social benefits to Naples, enhancing its appeal as a place to live, work, and study.

The collaboration between various governmental and academic institutions underscores a unified vision for a more connected and sustainable Naples. This initiative is a testament to strategic planning aimed at addressing historical urban challenges and preparing the city for future growth and development.
