Rome Fortifies Security for Festive Season Amidst Major Events
Rome, Italy – In anticipation of the Christmas and Epiphany holidays, Rome is implementing a robust security plan, featuring increased anti-vehicle barriers and heightened controls in crowded areas. This initiative, spearheaded by the Questura, aims to ensure public safety during a period marked by numerous religious ceremonies and public events, including the closing of four Holy Doors for the Jubilee and a ticketed New Year’s Eve concert at Circus Maximus.
Intensified Security Measures from December 8 to January 6
The intensified security measures, which commenced on December 8 and will remain in effect until January 6, are a proactive response to the influx of hundreds of thousands of tourists and the religious significance of the season. Despite no specific local threats, the international climate necessitates a heightened state of vigilance, according to Questura officials.
Technical meetings, led by Questor Roberto Massucci and his staff, in collaboration with the Prefecture and other law enforcement agencies, have focused on implementing a comprehensive security strategy. This includes a review and enhancement of passive security tools, such as anti-vehicle barriers and planters, strategically placed near high-density areas. These barriers are designed to prevent vehicles from entering specific zones around places of worship, museums, and Christmas markets.
Increased Surveillance at Transportation Hubs and Key Locations
Key logistical hubs across the capital are also experiencing increased patrols and controls. Metro stops and major train stations, including Termini, Tiburtina, San Pietro, and Ostiense, are under the vigilant eye of Polmetro and Polfer teams. Carabinieri, the Financial Guard, and municipal police are actively participating in these operations. Furthermore, highway patrols are monitoring roads leading into and out of Rome, while mounted police are overseeing the Christmas Village at Villa Borghese. Efforts are also being intensified to combat thefts, pickpocketing, and robberies in shopping centers.
Event-Specific Security Adjustments
Security deployments are being continuously adjusted based on the flow of people and the specific events scheduled. These include tonight’s prayer vigil and Midnight Mass at St. Peter’s, followed by Thursday morning’s ceremony and the closing of the Holy Door at Santa Maria Maggiore. December 27 and 28 will see the closing of the Holy Doors at San Giovanni and San Paolo fuori le Mura. The New Year’s Eve concert at Circus Maximus will be a ticketed event with metal detectors and a secured area. Finally, on January 6, the Epiphany Mass at St. Peter’s will mark the closing of the last Holy Door of the Jubilee, followed by the Befana festival in Piazza Navona, featuring a show by the fire brigade.
This comprehensive security plan underscores Rome’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and visitors during the festive period.
