ROME – The celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Constituent Assembly, which between 1946 and 2026 marks one of the foundational passages of republican history, is the central theme of Rome Capodarte 2026. This initiative, promoted by Roma Capitale through the Department of Culture and Coordination of initiatives related to Memorial Day, with the collaboration of the Department of Productive Activities, Equal Opportunities, and Investment Attraction, returns on January 1st to animate the city with a widespread cultural marathon, consisting of over a hundred events, almost all with free admission, distributed throughout all neighborhoods.
A TRIBUTE TO THE BIRTH OF DEMOCRACY
This fifth edition aims to pay homage to the path of freedom born from the liberation struggle against Nazifascism and culminated in the foundation of Italian democracy. The program offers a civic and artistic reflection that traces the stages of this journey starting from 1946, a crucial year that marked the beginning of the Constituent Assembly’s work and the entry of women into the polls for the first time in national history. To highlight the value of this heritage, 10,000 copies of the Italian Constitution will be distributed free of charge during events organized in all 15 Municipalities throughout the day.
THE CONSTITUTION AND INSTITUTIONAL PREFACES
The publication of the Constitution distributed on the occasion of Capodarte is enriched by an introduction signed by the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, and the Councillor for Culture, Massimiliano Smeriglio, who illustrated the contents of the initiative at a press conference. The volume also contains a preface by constitutional scholar Cesare Pinelli, which helps to deepen the historical and civic value of the fundamental text of the Republic.
A WIDESPREAD AND PARTICIPATORY CELEBRATION
Rome Capodarte 2026 is configured as a widely diffused celebration, with the direct involvement of the Municipalities, the main Capitoline cultural institutions, local associations, and numerous cultural operators, together with artists. Throughout the day, numerous protagonists of the Italian cultural and musical scene will take turns, creating a program that spans different languages and genres, from spoken word to music, from theater to dance.
THE MAIN STAGES AND EVENTS
The program for January 1st will involve squares, museums, theaters, and cultural spaces in all neighborhoods and includes, in particular, three large stages located in as many quadrants of the city. In Piazza Navona, the afternoon will open with irony, starting at 3:30 PM, with performances by Beatrice Rigillo, Emanuela Cappello, Raffaello Corti a.k.a. Faccestamagia, and Lorenzo Maragoni. From 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the square will host the New Year’s Milonga, an international Argentine tango event with Daiana Guspero and Miguel Ángel Zotto, who will involve citizens and dance schools, followed by the musical selection of TDJ Lavinia Livi.
MUSIC AND INSTALLATIONS IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS
In the eastern quadrant of the city, the celebration will continue at Rampa Prenestina, a newly redeveloped space in Via Aquilonia in Municipio V, where from 6:00 PM a concert-show will take place with Andrea Rivera, Margherita Vicario, Villa Ada Posse, Linda Stabilini a.k.a. StabLinda, and Baro dei Colle der Fomento accompanied by vocalist Lyst. In the same space, it will be possible to visit six artistic installations created by ultraviolet.to, Studio Cliché, Fielda1, and Thomas Fasciana.
THE ACILIA STAGE AND URBAN CULTURES
In Municipio X, in the square of Acilia Station, starting at 6:00 PM, a K-pop show is planned, with dance, performances, and meeting moments curated by SrC Produzioni, followed by hip hop and breakdance exhibitions organized by Danza MSP Lazio. From 8:00 PM, the stage will be dedicated to rap and urban rhymes with Piotta, Nesli, Beba, and Jelecrois, representative of different generations and styles of the Italian music scene.
THE VALUES OF THE CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY AT THE CENTER OF THE PROGRAM
A large part of the program is built around the inspiring principles chosen by the Constituents, through a calendar of events that explore themes such as equality, the rejection of war and the promotion of peace, the centrality of labor, anti-fascism, popular sovereignty, the inviolable rights of man, and the role of culture and scientific and technical research. The tribute to the Mothers and Fathers of the Constituent Assembly aims to recognize their ability to translate values and principles into a lasting system of civil rights and freedoms, at the foundation of republican Italy.
AN ENTIRE CITY INVOLVED
Alongside events dedicated to the roots of democracy, Rome Capodarte 2026 extends its stage to the entire city with a broad and articulated program that includes musical and theatrical performances in squares, extraordinary openings of exhibitions and exhibition spaces, and numerous activities for families, with workshops and initiatives dedicated to children. The event thus becomes an invitation to experience and rediscover every neighborhood, sharing the beginning of the New Year in the name of beauty and sociability.
