Rome, December 22 – Two powerful explosions shook the La Rustica district on Saturday night, causing extensive damage to a residential building and nearby vehicles. The incidents, which occurred in quick succession, prompted an immediate response from firefighters and law enforcement. While no injuries were reported, the scale of the damage has raised concerns among residents.
Two ‘Bomboni’ Detonated in La Rustica
The first explosion occurred shortly after 9:30 PM on Saturday, December 20, on Via di Castel di Ieri, causing residents to report a loud bang that startled the entire neighborhood. Moments later, a second, equally powerful blast was reported on Via Naide. The nature of the explosive devices, described by witnesses as ‘bomboni’ (large firecrackers), is currently under investigation.
Significant Damage to Residential Property and Vehicles
The initial explosion on Via di Castel di Ieri severely damaged the entrance hall of a popular housing complex, affecting the building’s walls and destroying the meter box. The force of the blast also shattered windows on all six floors of the building, as well as those in several private apartments. The second explosion on Via Naide caused similar damage, breaking windows in stairwells up to the sixth floor and damaging the windshields of two parked cars.
Residents, many of whom live in the Ater housing complex, expressed their fear and disbelief. “These were not just simple firecrackers,” stated one resident, highlighting the severity of the damage and the potential implications of such an act. The incidents have left the community anxious, particularly as the holiday season approaches.
Investigation Underway, No Hypothesis Excluded
Firefighters and representatives from Roma Capitale returned to the scene on Sunday evening to remove hazardous loose glass from the damaged windows. Law enforcement officials have launched a comprehensive investigation into the double explosion. At this stage, no potential motive or perpetrator has been ruled out. Investigators are considering all possibilities, ranging from a reckless act by adolescents to a more sinister warning. Residents have suggested that the area is home to a diverse population, implying that the incident could be targeted.
The local community is now hoping for a swift resolution to the investigation and prompt repairs to the damaged properties. There are concerns, however, that the upcoming Christmas holidays may delay the repair process, leaving residents to face the aftermath of the explosions during a time typically associated with peace and celebration.
