Naples is proving to be a crucial engine for the advancement of differentiated waste collection in Southern Italy. The new Ispra Urban Waste 2025 Report indicates that the South has reached 60.2% in differentiated waste collection, significantly narrowing a historical gap with the rest of the country. Within this context, Asia Napoli asserts that the city has played a decisive role: between 2022 and 2025, the Campania capital has achieved an approximate seven-percentage-point increase, contributing to the overall recovery of the area and approaching the national average.
The Challenge of Actual Recycling and New Infrastructure
Despite the positive data, this progress alone is insufficient to guarantee the crucial objective of actual recycling. The disparity between the amount of waste differentiated and the amount actually processed for transformation still exceeds fifteen percentage points. This limitation underscores the urgent need to enhance the waste treatment infrastructure in Southern Italy.
It is within this framework that Asia Napoli has announced a tender for a new facility dedicated to the recovery of bulky waste and paper/cardboard. This step is deemed essential to reduce costs, improve recycling volumes, and consolidate a modern, industrialized management model for waste.
Officials Emphasize Infrastructure and Aggregation
Vincenzo Santagada, the municipal councilor, interprets the increase in differentiated waste collection as a sign of the city’s maturation. However, he urges decisive action on infrastructure, which he considers the only means to reduce costs for citizens and ensure sustainable improvements in waste management processes.
Domenico Ruggiero, the sole administrator of Asia Napoli, highlights the necessity of overcoming territorial fragmentation, which currently impedes efficiency, sustainability, and the ability to meet European targets. For Ruggiero, aggregation is not a threat to existing entities but a necessary evolution: a transformation that preserves identity and jobs while making the system more robust and competitive.
Long-Term Vision and Investment
Asia Napoli reiterates that the transition towards an industrial model demands significant investments, innovative technologies, comprehensive planning, and coherent governance of the entire supply chain. While the journey ahead is still extensive, the city of Naples is now demonstrating concrete figures, strategic approaches, and a clear vision that are bringing it closer to a goal that, for many years, seemed unattainable.
The company remains committed to fostering a more efficient and sustainable waste management system, aligning with broader environmental objectives and improving the quality of life for its citizens. The ongoing efforts are expected to yield further positive results in the coming years, solidifying Naples’ position as a leader in environmental stewardship in the region.
