Milan, December 11 – The Milan Porta Romana railway station is set to reopen on Sunday, December 14th, under its new name, Milano Scalo Romana, following an extensive renovation project. This strategic infrastructure upgrade, costing €22 million, aims to significantly enhance connectivity and accessibility within the Milanese rail network, particularly benefiting areas undergoing major urban transformations, including those near the future Olympic Village.
A Strategic Step for Milan’s Infrastructure
Claudia Maria Terzi, Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Public Works, emphasized the importance of this reopening. “The reopening of the Milan Porta Romana station, now renovated and renamed Milano Scalo Romana, marks a decisive step in implementing the provisions of the Scali Program Agreement signed in 2017 by Regione Lombardia, the Municipality of Milan, FS Italiane Spa, RFI Spa, and FSSU Spa,” Terzi stated. She added that this development also represents a significant advancement for the redevelopment, accessibility, and connection of an area adjacent to the Olympic Village, and a part of Milan destined for substantial future urban development.
The announcement from RFI confirms the station’s reopening on December 14th, coinciding with the introduction of the winter timetable for the Milan-Mortara railway line (southern Milan belt).
Enhanced Connectivity in the Milanese Hub
The new Milano Scalo Romana station is poised to become a vital hub, offering improved connections across the city. “The new Milano Scalo Romana station will be served by various lines, and with the new services, connectivity to the metropolitan lines will increase,” Terzi explained. Passengers will benefit from enhanced intermodal exchanges:
- Milano San Cristoforo: Connection with Metro Line M4
- Milano Romolo: Connection with Metro Line M2
- Milano Scalo Romana: Connection with Metro Line M3
- Rogoredo: Connection with High-Speed Rail services
This comprehensive integration underscores the significant investment and strategic importance of this project for Milan’s railway network.
Interventions at the Station
The revitalized station has been brought up to European standards for metropolitan railway services, with a strong focus on accessibility. Key improvements include:
- Platforms: Raised to 55 cm for easier boarding and alighting from trains.
- Access: Equipped with stairs, escalators, and elevators.
- Waiting Areas: Installation of new waiting shelters.
- Tactile Paths: Pavement featuring tactile paths for visually impaired individuals.
- Traveler Building: Comprehensive renovation of the station building.
- Underpass: Construction of a new mixed-use underpass linking Via Longanesi and Via Sannio.
- Street Connections: Renovation of two fixed staircases and installation of two escalators connecting existing roads (Via Sannio and Via Longanesi) to Corso Lodi.
- Corso Lodi Access: Improved accessibility to the traveler building from Corso Lodi.
- Parking & Paths: Creation of parking spaces for people with reduced mobility and obstacle-free pathways.
- Bicycle Parking: Dedicated areas for bicycle parking.
- Access Road Revision: Overhaul of the access roads to the station.
€22 Million Investment by RFI
The €22 million investment was made by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (FS Group). Beyond the existing suburban line S9 (Saronno-Milan-Albairate), Milano Scalo Romana will also be served by the new S19 line (Albairate – Vermezzo – Rogoredo) and the R31 line (Rogoredo – Mortara / Alessandria). These new services are central to increasing the station’s role as an intermodal hub, strengthening connections with Milan’s metro system and high-speed rail.
