ROME, December 10 – An investigation has been initiated by prosecutors in Rome following the discovery of a so-called ‘rape list’ displayed within the bathrooms of the prestigious Giulio Cesare classical high school in the Trieste district. The inquiry centers on the charge of incitement to commit sexual violence, targeting the individual or group responsible for publishing the list.
Dual Investigation by Adult and Juvenile Prosecutors
The case has prompted a dual investigation, with both piazzale Clodio prosecutors and those for minors, coordinated by prosecutor Giovanna Lebboroni, actively involved. This dual approach is deemed necessary due to the possibility that the perpetrator behind the list could be a minor. Investigators are also not ruling out the involvement of a group of students from the institution in the decision to display the list.
Initial Findings and School Response
The investigation is in its preliminary stages, following initial assessments conducted by the Mobile Squad and Digos of the Rome Police Headquarters. The school principal was interviewed shortly after the discovery of the list. At present, no further hearings are scheduled for either students or teaching staff. The list, which explicitly named eight female students and one male student (circled in red) alongside the phrase “Lista di stupri” (rape list), was discovered at the end of November.
The incident was reported by the school’s student representatives, in conjunction with the “Zero Alibi” collective. While initial speculation suggested a possible link to student elections, investigators are currently treating this as one among several hypotheses under consideration. As of now, the investigation proceeds without any named suspects.
Community Reaction and Previous Incidents
The incident has sparked significant outrage within the school community and beyond. Students organized a protest march, demanding a safer school environment. This event is not isolated, as previous reports have indicated similar incidents and concerns within the school, leading to further investigations into potential links with far-right groups.
Reports from students, including one of the named girls, suggest that some individuals were targeted for their activism against gender-based violence. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in addressing and preventing such acts within educational institutions.
Broader Context and Future Actions
The case at Giulio Cesare High School underscores a broader societal concern regarding incitement to violence and the safety of young people, particularly within school settings. The ongoing investigation aims to identify those responsible and understand the motivations behind their actions. Authorities are committed to ensuring a secure and respectful environment for all students.
The incident has also prompted discussions about the role of school administrations in preventing and responding to such grave matters, as well as the need for comprehensive educational programs addressing respect, consent, and the dangers of online and offline harassment.
Further updates on the investigation are anticipated as prosecutors continue their work to uncover the full scope of the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
